The Russian Museum Encyclopaedia (RME) is a pioneering attempt at a generalised and systematised presentation of information currently at the disposal of Russian museum experts. For the first time in the world practice, it does not only offer a certain amount of facts about museums, but gives an integral and thorough picture of the museum world in a huge country, Russia, in historical perspective and in the context of a culture, in which museum is an individual component.

The RME offers data grouped into 5 big blocks: historical, theoretical, museological, biographical and applied museum science. The Index is the most comprehensive list of museum names published so far – 2991 museums.
